Accutane Side Effects
Accutane is the brand name of the generic formula isotretinoin, a substance used in the treatment of certain skin disorders including acne and some forms of skin cancer. Originally developed as a medication for pancreatic cancer and other chemotherapy treatments, Accutane became more popularly used for severe recalcitrant nodular acne in adolescents. Its effectiveness is shadowed by some quite noticeable side effects, the most serious of these being its properties of a teratogen, which is known to cause birth defects.
Prescription Use Of Accutane
Accutane is in the form of a capsule that is swallowed. Normally the drug is taken during or after a heavy meal, as Accutane has a very high level of lipophilicity. This medication is usually prescribed only when other treatment options have failed to produce positive results.
Dermatologists have recommended the use of Accutane for the treatment of cystic acne vulgaris and acne rosacea. The dosage prescribed for these conditions varies with the individual's age, weight and body type as well as the severity of the condition being treated.
Common And Severe Side Effects
Accutane is not to be taken by women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. The teratogenic potential of this drug is extremely high, and taking any form of isotretinoin can have severe effects on a developing fetus, resulting in a number of malformations, early birth, hearing and visual impairments, malformed earlobes and mental retardation. Studies suggest that there may be an increased risk for depression and/or suicidal thoughts in adolescents being prescribed Accutane, but conclusive statistics are unavailable at present. It is also known that a small amount of the active ingredient in Accutane can accumulate in male semen; men are advised to check with their doctor if their partner is planning a pregnancy.
Milder side effects of the drug include acne flare, dry skin and lips, skin peeling, dry eyes, nosebleeds, raised liver enzymes and headaches. Several studies have also linked problems with long bone growth in teenagers to the use of Accutane. This results in stunted growth in both males and females who may still be adding vertical height even in the late teen years.
Although not confirmed in terms of actual numbers, there are several important permanent side effects experienced by some who use Accutane. These include inflammatory bowel disease, hair loss or reduction of hairline, decreased night vision and dry eyes.
Legal Rights Of Patients Using Accutane
All forms of isotretinoin carry certain risks of health problems when taken by an individual, and patients being treated with this drug have legal rights if there are any complications resulting from the prescribed use. Because Accutane causes a number of side effects which are similar to those experienced with other drugs, it is important to know if this medication is the actual culprit if unusual symptoms develop.
Anyone who has taken Accutane in the past or is currently using any form of isotretinoin is strongly advised to consult with a legal professional if there is any belief of misdiagnosis, improper prescription of dosage, or dangerous side effects experienced with this medication. Even drugs that are FDA approved are often given as a treatment when alternative choices are available; it is the physician's responsibility to determine the proper pharmaceutical choice. Patients suffering any or all of the above mentioned effects related to the use of Accutane are encouraged to contact a legal representative or alternate medical professional without delay.
